Vikings request GM interview with Bills assistant GM Terrance Gray

The Vikings have started the search process for their next General Manager and the first outside candidate for the job has been identified.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports that they have requested an interview with Bills assistant GM Terrance Gray. The Vikings fired Kwesi Adofo-Mensah in January and executive V.P. of football operations Rob Brzezinski assumed the duties with a plan in place to conduct a full search after the draft.

Gray has been with the Bills since 2017, but he spent the previous 11 years as a scout for the Vikings so there he has familiarity with the organization ahead of any interview. He has also worked for the Chiefs during his time in the NFL.

Brzezinski could also be a candidate to take the job on a permanent basis and more candidates will likely surface in the coming days.

I like Brzez, but some of these other candidates are so far ahead of him when it comes to scouting that its not something that can be overlooked. Brzez is a contract and numbers guy who would have to rely heavily on guys like Grigson and the coaches on player/prospect evaluations. We just got out of a highly unsuccessful experiment with a lot of those same type of dynamics, and in my opinion, we really need an outsider with a solid background in scouting and roster building. Like I said, I don't know how the recommendation to the Wilfs isn't McKay or Teasley based on resume. Both have been the understudy to two of the absolute best GM's in the business and their team success speaks for itself

No doubt, we hate the nerdy wall street guy, lets replace him with the local accountant guy.

I say why not Brez, the role of GM doesn't have to be the traditional role, there is no reason he cant be GM but not be the top scout. The team needs to find a better mix of talent evaluators that can work with the coaches to find players that fit and build those draft boards from that. All Brez would need to do is be in charge of those people, not be in the trenches with them. Help keep them focused on their roles instead of trying to do their jobs. Make him a true manager of football people instead of the traditional role of essentially top scout and coach boss.

Agreed. If its Brez, I have little issue with it. I might slightly prefer one of these younger assistant GMs from a winning organization, but just slightly.

I also prefer to bring in fresh ideas to the organization, pure blood is rarely ever a good thing, however if you dont promote from within you will have a hard time retaining your own quality talent.

Seriously, what quality talent do they currently have? How many playoff victory's have this quality talent delivered? Get fucking real, time is now to get an outside perspective on the inability for the current internal talent to produce even a team that can compete for a playoff win and not just settle for mediocrity. Yea, we won enough games to get in the playoffs but we screwed ourselves out of a top draft pick.

Well we lost Goerge Paton to the Broncos a few years back, he seems to be doing ok turning that franchise around, weve lost others from the coaching staff that have been highly thought of, just because their talents aren't being fully utilized by those in charge doesnt mean they dont have talents. Im just saying if we do have qualtity personnel in house they would be foolish not to give them an opportunity to at least be interviewed.

And thus far the teams named for asst gms haven't really inspired me based on team track records.

From the outside it appears that Paton bows to the head coach in Denver. To say that the current list of assistant GM's to be interviewed don't inspire you, didn't Seattle just win the Super Bowl and their current GM is considered the best in the business, so the assistant GM would obviously had a hand in building that team. The Rams recently won a Super Bowl and certainly their assistant GM would have had a hand in building that team. The other mentioned candidates not so much. But to say that the Viking internal candidates shouldn't be given the opportunity, I just say what that have they done to warrant that consideration?

I'm good with Teasley, but I'm a McKay fan myself...I think Gray was dismissed quickly by too many too early.

I haven't said they do. I don't know personnel people in the NFL, not likely you are most anybody on this board know anybody behind the other gms, im just saying if they have somebody internal to look at I would hope they would, sometimes that grass isn't always greener.
